Enough is enough

This advertisement in a Hong Kong newspaper and its parodies all over China are the symptom of a larger 'enough' in the Middle Kingdom (and elsewhere in the world).
As the result, parochialism increases everywhere.
Historically, it has always been the prelude to rebellions or revolutions.
In 1968, the French students were chanting in the streets of Paris "Ras le Bol" (To the brim).
But it is the Tibetans who should write posters.

The People of Tibet have had enough.
  • Because of 60 years of colonization
  • Because we don't like violence
  • Because we have no religious freedom
  • Because we don't want an atheist government
  • Because the Dalai Lama is not allowed to be amongst us on the Roof of the World
  • Because too many migrants are been poured onto Tibet from the mainland
  • Because we do not want a militarized plateau. We don't need to be ready for another war with India
  • Because we want the environment of the Land of Snows to remain pure
  • etc. etc.
President Hu, please meet the Dalai Lama and sort out these issues with him.

In many ways, this 'We have had Enough' movement is similar to the Indignez-vous (Time for Outrage) of Stephane Hessel in Europe.

Hong Kong netizens print a full-page advertisement in Apple Daily newspaper demanding that Article 24 of Hong Kong Basic Law be revised to stop mainland pregnant women from going to Hong Kong. to give birth

Mutual resentment between Hong Kongers and mainlanders is nothing new, and has been both long-standing and widespread. Many Hong Kongers look down upon mainlanders as being crude and uncivilized, while many mainlanders in return chafe at Hong Kongers’ arrogance and sense of superiority.

Last month, a video of Hong Kongers and mainlanders arguing on the Hong Kong subway circulated online. What began as mainlanders eating on the Hong Kong subway violating the subway’s rules immediately expanded to all sorts of resentments by both sides. Controversial Peking University professor Kong Qingdong’s subsequent public rant that “many Hong Kongers are dogs” only escalated things further.

On Sina Weibo:
A group of Hong Kong netizens donated money to print a full-page advertisement in today’s Apple Daily newspaper:

Translation of the above Hong Kong advertisement:

Do you want Hong Kong to spend $1,000,000 HKD every 18 minutes raising “double negative” children? ["double negative" refers to when neither parent is from Hong Kong.]

  • Because we understand that you are victimized by poisonous milk powder, we’ve tolerated you coming to panic buy milk powder;
