The peak lies on the border between the Lhasa Prefecture (Meldro Gungkar County) and the Nyingchi City (Kongpo Gyamda County) at an elevation of 5,200 metres above sea level.
Interestingly, on the west of the pass, the climate is dry and cool, while on the eastern side it is warmer, more humid with a richer vegetation.
The pass is the highest point on the Nyingchi–Lhasa section of the G318 National Highway.
In January 2015, it was announced that a tunnel would be built.
On April 26, 2019, the Mila Mountain Tunnel, a part of the 400-km high-grade highway linking Lhasa with Nyingchi was opened for the traffic.
It is said to be the world's highest highway tunnel, at an altitude of over 4,750 meters above sea level. The two-way tunnel shortens the 18-km distance over the mountain to 5.7 km.
Once again, it is clear that China is faster than India for building such infrastructure feat.
The tunnel has also a crucial strategic importance for the Tibet Military Region ...and the India's borders in Arunachal Pradesh.
